We are always getting asked if we are going to start selling young coconuts but the logistics of this and risk of spoilt and bad coconuts has made it impossible, so I am particularly excited about the introduction of this fantastic new product. On a recent visit to the Organic Products Show at Olympia I met the people behind this amazing new product. After years of research, thousands of pounds of investment and many attempts at perfecting the technique (how to package the coconut water and give it a shelf-life without pasteurising it) - at last it's here, Coconut Water now available packed and ready to drink. I would say that this is about as close at it gets to drinking fresh coconut water other than of course cracking open a freshly picked young coconut and drinking it.

The clever process involves piercing the freshly picked coconut with a needle and drawing out the water directly into a vacuum container which is chilled. It is then transported to the packaging plant where it passes through a patented filtration system to remove only the bacteria that causes the water to spoil and nothing else. Still in a vacuum the coconut water reaches the carton still not knowing it has left it's original coconut shell.
Having now sampled a fair few cartons myself, I am very impressed indeed, and so too are Karen and Ems the other two Fresh tasters who really have been putting in overtime on this tasting project! I reckon I could taste the difference between this product and the real one if asked to do a blind fold challenge, but this is a very close substitute indeed and if like me you don't live on a Desert Island with palm trees growing in your garden then this is definitely the solution to all your Coconut Water problems. You also have the reassurance that when you open the carton it is not going to be off.
Cultivation of the Coconut
Coconut trees (Cocos Nucifera) grow in tropical countries, such as Brazil, everywhere along the costs and river shores. When harvested as a young, green coconut, this coconut contains the exceptional, fresh coconut juice, out of which Dr. Martins' Coco Drink is made. On plantations in Brazil, a particular genus of dwarf coconut palm tree is grown for Dr. Martins' Coco Drink. These plantations are accredited with being organic; hence the absence of toxins or synthetic fertilisers. Thus, the quality of the coconut juice is guaranteed, thanks to the methods of cultivation.
Extraction method: sustainability counts
Neither the taste, nor the quality, of Dr Martins' Coco Drink is affected by heating or by the addition of stabilisers. The coconut juice is instantaneously extracted by means of vacuum technology in situ. Its viability is then assured thanks to the micro-filtration technology exclusively developed for Dr. Martins' Coco Drink and it is subsequently bottled in innovative, environmentally friendly carton packaging. This new procedure guarantees a shelf-life span of 9 months after the bottling date. All sectors along the added value chain - from cultivating the coconuts, through bottling, to finally consumption by the end customer - fall under the motto of sustainability.
